The Port Authority, which also operates the busy JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty airports near New York City, said increasing airline service would be one of its top priorities as it assumed operational responsibility for ACY. Spirit appears to be doing reasonably well at ACY, flying nonstop to several cities and announcing earlier this year that it would grow its flight attendant base there. The airport finally appears to have made some traction with Spirit Airlines, which was ACY's only airline to offer regularly scheduled passenger service prior to United's arrival. United's United Express affiliates now fly one daily round-trip flight to both Chicago and Houston on 50-seat Embraer regional jets. The Associated Press writes United's arrival marks what "transportation officials hope will be a new era of prosperity for the struggling facility and the gambling resort it serves." The airport is hopeful the carrier's new nonstop service will cement the airport as a viable travel option in the region.
