If you’re a Prime member, then this might suit you – it’s easy to read books and stream from Prime Video.

The big problem with Amazon’s Fire tablets is that they run a forked version of Android called Fire OS and they’re locked to Amazon’s Appstore.

The screen quality and poor sound definitely let it down. I found the Amazon Fire 7 was adequate for reading books and web browsing, but not so great for watching movies or gaming. The Amazon Fire HD 8 also boasts dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support and they really blow the mono speaker in the Fire 7 away. The Walmart Onn (left) and Amazon Fire 7. Both the Amazon Fire HD 8 and the 8-inch Walmart Onn have bigger screens that are also slightly sharper. It’s also not the sharpest screen around. While the screen is fairly bright, it can be tough to read outdoors in direct sunlight. My review unit is plum, but you can get it in sage or twilight blue, and classic black is still an option. It’s comfortable to hold with one hand and easy to stow in a bag. The Amazon Fire 7 is the perfect size for portability. Unfortunately, Prime Video and Netflix marathons deserve a brighter screen, and we wish we could drop the ads (without paying) and add in YouTube and the rest of Google's apps.I found the Amazon Fire 7 was adequate for reading books and web browsing, but not so great for watching movies or gaming.īuild quality is good and it feels solid. Its comparatively speedy performance and long battery life will made it a solid consumption device.

This Amazon Fire 7 review has shown that this is the best tablet at its price point, and will be enjoyed by many who haven't ventured upwards into the more expensive slates. Its response time and quickness to inform me about the weather was as speedy as one would hope from a regular Alexa speaker. That being said, there's no reason to give Amazon much credit here: Alexa was designed to be touch-free, and that should have always been the case. Touch-free (voice-activated) Alexa is the latest improvement for the Fire 7, so you can now trigger the assistant with its name (with Echo and Computer as alternate hail-signs). The Walmart Onn does not have these limitations, running a more traditional build of Android (that has some ads for Walmart). In fact, when you open YouTube in the Silk browser (Chrome isn't available either), you get a slightly older version of YouTube. Those who compute in Amazon households won't complain, but those who want real Google apps will find none: the Google Play store is not available on Amazon tablets, and neither is Gmail or YouTube.

The slate's home screen sections - including those dedicated to ebooks, videos, games and shopping - are all arms of Amazon's many services.
